I am always on the look out for interesting and unusual vintage pieces for the website and when I saw this Hermes 'piano' bag I knew I had to have it! This bag is a modern take on the original 'piano' bag first launched in the 1950-60s. The Hermes piano bag, is rectangular shape very classic in style and initially designed for society 'ladies-who-lunch'. Every one is familar with the Hermes and 'birkin' and the 'kelly' bags but what I liked about this bag its understated and a classic. Hermes is a French luxury goods brand that was launched in 1837. They pride themselves for making high end luxury leather goods, not using asembly lines, but rather each bag is hand-made by one craftsman who may have been employed by the company for decades. Each bags is hand-stitching individual pieces with linen thread and using an awl. One bag might require 18 to 24 hours to produce.
You can tell this is a quality item, the burgundy calf leather is super soft and is beautifully off-set by the biege silk fabric. Inside there is a zip pocket and extra compartments for storage the bag and there is additional back pocket. The bag is clean both inside and out, some gentle wear on the leather strap. Overall in excellent condition. Date stamping: circle with X in middle of circle circa 1994, stamp located right of inside zip pocket. If you are going to 'invest' in Hermes this is a good 'starter'.
