A GUIDE TO CHANEL JEWELLERY DATE STAMPING

Not sure whether your vintage Chanel jewellery is authentic? Want to know which year your vintage Chanel jewellery was made? Please head over to the article Dating Chanel Costume Jewelry by Liz Linsey who has spent a year researching the history of Chanel date stamping.

Here’s an addendum to Liz’s work

STAMPING 1986-1994

In 1986 Karl Lagerfield appointed Victoire de Castellane as head designer of jewellery. During the period 1986-1994 Chanel’s central design team also produced jewellery alongside Castellane. The difference in the date stamping between the two parties was simple, stamping with a 2 prefix and accompanying number were Castellane designs. Jewellery stamping without this number were designs by the Chanel design team.

To summarise, both teams during this period:

  • Began using an oval shaped plate
  • Stamped CHANEL at the top
  • Added the copyright © symbol and registered ® trademark logos either side of the words Chanel
  • Stamped the double CC logo inside a circle in the centre of the plate
  • Added Made in France underneath the CC logo Castellane numbers ranged from 21-29 indicating the season which it was made.

CHANEL DESIGN TEAM STAMPING

As you can see below the Chanel design team stamping is almost identical except for the absence of the numbers. So if you see a date stamp like below you know the piece was designed by the Chanel design team, not Castellane between 1986-1994. Unfortunately pin-pointing the exact date is not possible.
